How to Make a Recipe Yours: Writing & Developing without Copying or Appropriating

Presented by: Breana Lai Killeen, MPH, RD & Charlotte Rutledge

What is an authentic recipe? Can you write a recipe if you are not from a specific culture? In this presentation, we’ll explore how to name, develop, and alter global recipes so they retain their heritage in terms of ingredients and methods while being respectful of cultural appropriation. We’ll also discuss words to use and words to avoid when describing food in titles, headnotes, and general media.

As a result of this presentation, the attendee will:

  1. Learn what cultural appropriation is and how to avoid it.
  2. Learn how to respectfully develop, write, name, and photograph recipes from cultures other than your own.
  3. Learn the words to use sparingly and/or never use when talking about food.

Please note you will need to answer a few questions to view the webinar recording and to access your CPE.
